Abstract

771,756. Ventilating aircraft &c. GODFREY (HANWORTH), Ltd., [formerly GODFREY & PARTNERS (HOLDINGS), Ltd., Sir G.]. Aug. 18, 1952 [Aug. 25, 1951], No. 20069/51. Class 137 [Also in Group XIII] The cabins of aircraft, or other spaces, are heated or cooled at will by a system comprising an air compressor 11 an an air expander 27, a valve 36 being operable to direct air from the compressor either to a channel 34 having a restriction or heat choke 35 through, which the hot air is passed to, the cabin &c., or to the expander to supply cold air to the cabin &c. A connection 38 may also supply pressure air at moderate temperature for testing the cabins of pressurized aircraft. The apparatus is mounted on a truck 10 for conditioning aircraft then on the ground, the compressor 11 being driven by an internal combustion engine 13 and the required air outlet being connected to the cabin &c. by a flexible hose 31, the other outlets being closed by hinged caps 37, 29, 39. Air passes through a filter 15 and silencer 16 to the compressor 11 and then through a silencer 17 either to the hot air connection 34 having a restrictor valve 35, or through a cooler 22 and valve 36 to a centrifugal compressor 25 where it is additionally compressed, then through an intercooler 26 to the expansion turbine 27 from which the cold air passes through a water separator 28 to the hose connection 31. The coolers 22, 26 are cooled . by ambient air induced by a fan 32 and exhausted through the back of the truck through louvres 33. Disinfectant or deodorant solution may be supplied to the air from tanks 19, 20. For pressure testing the hinged caps 29, 37 and the valve 36 are closed and the pipe 38 connected to the cabin, spill valve 41 opening to allow the pressure to be built up gradually. When the required pressure difference is attained relief valve 43 opens and the engine 13 may then be stopped, the pressure being maintained by a non- return valve 40. The pressure is released when desired by opening a bleed valve 42. Hinged brackets 54 are provided on the truck for supporting the flexible hose 31.
