Abstract
472,334. Cooling aero-engines. ELLOR, J. E., and PARAVICINI, T. P. DE. April 8, 1936, No. 10372. [Class 4] Means for cooling an air-cooled aero-engine having one or more banks of cylinders arranged parallel to the crank-shaft and disposed in a cowling continuous with a wing surface, include one or more ducts communicating with openings in the leading edge of the wing and so shaped as to convert pressure energy of the cooling air-stream into kinetic energy at discharge and discharging the exhaust gases from the engine into the stream before its discharge to the surrounding atmosphere. In one form, air entering a wing A<1> through apertures C is led through passages D to the lateral spaces E between the cylinder of an engine A arranged in a cowling B faired into the wing. The air passes the engine cylinders and traverses spaces F above and below the wing spar D<1> and is led through a passage F<1> to an outlet F<2> controlled by flaps F3. Each bank of cylinders exhausts into a manifold G. In a modification the engine is accommodated entirely inside the wing.
