Abstract

588,655. Cooling exhaust gases. SOC. ANON DES APPAREILS G. A. L. Dec. 13, 1939, No. 32150. Convention date, March 30. [Class 7 (ii)] An exhaust cooling device for internal combustion engines of aircraft or vehicles comprises thin hollow blades or sheets 3, Figs. 1 and 2, with a freely open outlet edge 8, the sheets being curved to bring the exhaust stream into alignment with the air current at the outlet point whatever be the direction of the exhaust pipes 6 forming part of the manifold 5. The passages in the sheets are sub-divided by pressing together the walls of the sheet along lines 4, Fig. 2. The sheets may be either parallel or disposed radially to an axis adjacent-the flange 7. In the case of a twelve cylinder engine of V-form one exhaust cooling device is connected to the adjacent outlets of each pair of cylinders. In the application to a radial engine, Fig. 5 arranged behind the cowling 13 of an aeroplane having a fuselage 14, the sheets are curved so as to direct the exhaust in the direction f4 of the resultant of the external and internal air currents f1<1> and f3.
