[Class 4] [Also in Groups XXVII and XXXI] In a multi-cylinder engine, especially one having cylinders arranged in line, individual exhaust passages from those cylinders whose exhaust periods do not overlap are connected to a common pipe whose exit faces rearwards to improve the propulsion of the aircraft or vehicle on which the engine is mounted. Arrangements are shown for straight eight, V twelve and V sixteen engines.
