Abstract
552,164. Cooling cylinders, charge, oil &c. READ, J. R., and GREATRIX, F. B. Sept. 22, 1941, No. 12262. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXIII and XXXIV] In an air-cooled aircraft or other engine having one or more banks of cylinders extending lengthwise of the crankshaft, an air-cooled cooling device, for example for oil or charging air, is mounted at one or each end of the bank of cylinders with its cooling-air passages normal to the length of the bank, and a flow of air is directed transversely of the bank through the cooler and in parallel between the cylinders. The cooling device may cool oil for lubricating the engine or for operating mechanism in the aircraft, or may cool the air supply to the engine between or after the stages of a multi-stage supercharger. In one form, Figs. 1 and 2, the engine has four banks of cylinders 11 and a cooling device 26 of substantially the same dimensions as a cylinder is arranged at the rear end or at each end of each bank. The engine is enclosed in a nacelle 12 and baffles 15 along each bank of cylinders divide the space around the engine into upper and lower passages 16 and side passages 17 closed at the ends by bulkheads 14, 21. Air entering through passages 23 in the wing 13 flows over a supercharger 19 in the compartment 18, through the passages 16, cooling devices 26 and passages 17 to outlets 24 controlled by adjustable flaps 25. The air also passes between the cylinders from the passages 16 to the passages 17. Exhaust manifolds 27 are arranged in the passages 17 and discharge through the outlets 24. In a modification, the air is admitted through the nose of the nacelle and through the lower passage 16 and compartment 18 to the upper passage 16 ; from both passages 16 it flows to the passages 17 through the coolers and between the cylinders. In another form, Fig. 4, an inverted V-engine has a single air-entry passage 16 from which the air flows through the coolers 26 and between the cylinders to an outlet space 17.
