Abstract

760,904. Cooling cylinders ; ventilating crankcases and rocker boxes. CHESNUTT, R. C. Dec. 13, 1954, No. 36028/54. Class 7 (2). Tubes 26 enclosing push rods 20 convey cooling air from a pressurized crankcase to a rocker box 27. The rocker box has a breather plug 28, as has the crankcase, to which pressure air is bled off, via a tube 48 and thermostat 49, from a shroud 43, supplied by a crankshaft driven blower 41 at one end of the engine, and directing cooling air transversely over blocks each containing a pair of cylinders 5, the dual inlet passage 11 and separate exhaust passages 12 of which have fins 22 which bridge across between the inlet and exhaust passages but leave a gap 50 above and below the inlet passage. The individual cylinders 5 are also finned. The thermostat 49 may wholly or partially prevent air passing to the crankcase when the engine is cool and increases the air flow with increasing engine temperature. A carburetter 32 and starter 34 are provided, whilst a distributer 31 mounted on a generator (not shown)'feeds sparking plugs 46.
