Abstract

864,396. Construction and cooling of cylinders; combustion chambers. MOTOREN-WERKE MANNHEIM AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT VORM. BENZ ABT. STAT. MOTORENBAU. June 3, 1959, No. 19000/59. Classes 7(2) and 7(3). An air-cooled cylinder head has a central aircooling channel 22, Fig. 2, between integral inlet and exhaust passages 5, 6 and an auxiliary combustion chamber 10 which is partly surrounded by the cooling air inlet side of the air channel, and is so arranged that a first portion of the cooling air is directed to cool the combustion chamber 10 and then deflected upwards whilst a second portion is directed downwards to cool the central portion 32, Fig. 1, of the cylinder head base 1. The first portion is deflected in the direction of the arrows D by the fins 9 of the combustion chamber 10 into the channel 29 which passes underneath the top portion (or rocker box) 2. A relatively cool second portion passes along with, but outside of, the first portion taking the path of the arrows E until it is directed downwards by the fins 31 on to the central portion 32. The horizontal web 27 keeps the first relatively hot portion of cooling air out of contact with the second portion. In Fig. 3, the combustion chamber 10 is secured to an insert 14 which has thermal insulation provided by an air gap 35, a sealing ring 40 and the collar 36 of the insert. The combustion chamber 10 is described in Specification 850,315.
