Abstract
1438874 Rotary piston internal combustion engines OUTBOARD MARINE CORP 6 Sept 1973 [8 Jan 1973] 42153/73 Heading F1F An engine which may be of the Wankel type is cooled by a fan 63 discharging air radially into a spiralling shroud 131 to an outlet fan which the air is ducted separately first to a duct 81 through axially extending air passages 77 Fig. 6 found between radial fins 37 extending from the peri- phery of the hotter exhaust side of the engine which fins are enclosed by an arcuate plate 75, secondly through a duct 105 to a plenum chamber 59 situated at the end of the engine remote from the fan 63, from which plenum chamber the air passes through passages 97 formed between axially extending arcuate fins 57 at the end of the engine and enclosed by a cover 103 and thirdly to a similar plenum chamber and series of axially extending arcuate fins disposed at the other end of the engine between the engine and the fan 63. The spiralling shroud 131 is fanned to provide a substantially constant air pressure at its output, and the ducting is such as to provide a uniformly constant flow of air between the radial fins 37 and the axial fins at both ends of the engine.
