Abstract

658,304. Rotary engines. ROSE. A. A. Dec. 10, 1948, No. 32073. [Class 110(ii)] A rotary internal-combustion engine has axially sliding vanes 25 and means to vary the timing of the ignition obtained from sparking plugs 47 initially, and hot-gas flashback when the engine is running steadily. Each vane is formed of a number of plates with springs which may press pairs apart radially, axially and circumferentially to secure efficient sealing. The volume of each expansion chamber is greater than each induction chamber. The rotor 22, carried on the shaft 21, is provided with sealing rings 39, Fig. 3, which have a series of staggered slots in their edges, Fig. 7 (not shown). Further sealing rings 40 prevent the escape of gas across the rotor periphery and are attached to the inner surface of the stator 20. The plug 47 is carried by a housing 48, rotatable in a side wall of the stator and the housing outlet port 55 is eccentric to the housing axis and exceeds in diameter the width of a vane unit. Rotation of the housing varies the timing of ignition of the gases in the working chambers. The housing is forced on to its seat 50 by gas pressure, and held in place by a locknut 51. Cooling and lubricating liquid is led into the engine through a duct 42 and eight radial ducts 43 leading to an annular groove 44 in the rotor periphery and a stator groove 45 having a discharge port 46.
