Abstract

1,030,200. Rotary piston internal combustion engines. A. JORDAN. Sept. 12, 1963 [Sept. 19, 1962], No. 36022/63. Heading F1F. A rotary piston I.C. engine comprises a housing having a central part or jacket 14, Figs. 1 and 2, of oval bore, a shaft 1 coaxial with the bore on which is fixed a rigid arm 2 carrying at its ends pivotedly mounted pistons 6 and a flywheel 5 formed also as a cooling fan 4. The ends of the pistons 6 are in constant sealing contact with the oval bore and the sides thereof are fitted with spring-loaded sealing strips 12 engageable with side walls 16 of the end parts of the casing. Cooling air admitted through an inlet duct 17 is drawn in the fan 4 to pass through apertures in the end parts and thence deflected into a duct 18. The duct 18 may be connected to atmosphere or to a duct 20 supplying combustion air to the engine, some of which is forced under pressure through the space between a piston and the oval bore to scavenge previously combusted gases and to pass through the exhaust outlet 21. Operating as a diesel engine, fuel is injected into a combustion chamber 24a through a nozzle 22. Semi-circular sealing pads 10 are fitted in the pistons with sealing strips 11. The jacket 14 may also be water-cooled with the inlet located close to the combustion chamber. In another embodiment, a further rigid arm 2a, Fig. 3 (not shown) clamped around the shaft 1 and movable relatively to the arm 2 is fitted. At the ends of this arm 2a, further pistons 6 are pivotally mounted and the ends of these pistons abut semi-circular sealing bars 10 fitted with sealing strips 11 which also abut the ends of the pistons carried by the arm 2. When operating with a gas-air mixture and fitted with a spark-plug 22a, the gas-air flow mixture in each of the four working chambers is ignited in turn. When operating as a diesel engine alternate chambers carry uncompressed and heated cooling air which effects cooling of the oval bore. A single piston may be used in which case an extension of a radial arm will be fitted with a balance weight or three pistons arranged at the corners of an equilateral triangle.
