Abstract

484,300. Propelling aircraft. ELLOR, J. E., and PARAVICINI, T. P. DE. Sept. 30,1936, No. 26567. [Class 4] [Also in Groups XIII and XXIX] The flow of cooling-air through a duct B of an aircraft, particularly a cowling for the engine radiator C, is controlled by one or more flaps E, G of stream-line cross-section located at the exit of the duct and each pivoted about an axis near the centre of aerodynamic balance of the flap and disposed so that the leading edge of the flap is always inside the cowling. The flaps may be packed at the sides with felt &c., and where the engine cowling has a protuberance F<1>, Fig. 3, the trailing edges of the flaps may be curved slightly upwards to change the air stream into a horizontal direction. The flaps may be adjusted by rods E<3>, G<1> under the control of the pilot or of a thermostat.
