Abstract
504,539. Propelling aircraft. ARMSTRONG WHITWORTH AIRCRAFT, Ltd., SIR W. G., and LLOYD, J. Sept. 30, 1938, No. 28412. [Class 4] An air-cooled engine having X-like banks of in-line cylinders is disposed chordwise in the wing of an aircraft ; each cylinder bank extends across an individual duct extending from the leading edge either to the trailing-edge or to a space at the rear of the engine with an outlet at the trailing edge so that the direction of flow of the cooling air is not materially altered ; baffles guiding the cooling air round the cylinders. In one form, an aero-engine 14 is disposed within a wing 11, the upper surface of which maintains its form, the lower surface, if necessary being slightly bulged. The ducts 15 have semicircular inlets arranged (as shown). The outlets from space 18 are controlled by pivoted flaps 20. The cross-sectional area of the space 18 is arranged to be substantially constant. The engine may drive a tractor or a pusher airscrew or both. Specification 463,474 is referred to.
