Abstract

542,653. Propelling aircraft and ships. CORBITT, R. W. July 20, 1940, Nos. 11945 and 17620. [Classes 4 and 114] In order to utilize the energy in the wake of an aircraft air from the wake which has been accelerated during the passage of the aircraft is taken in, come pressed and discharged rearwardly at a velocity, relatively to the aircraft, not less than one quarter the forward speed of. the -aircraft. Air near the trailing edge of a wing may be taken in through a rearwardly open slot at the extreme rear edge or through forwardly facing slots 24, 25, Fig. 3, formed by raised portions 20, 21 of the surface. The air so collected is passed through a blower and discharged rearwardly at a velocity relatively to the craft not less than one quarter the speed of the aircraft, or at a speed equal to the speed of discharge from the airscrew if one is used. The air may be used for cooling a radiator during its passage through the aircraft, or for supplying air to the engine or for ventilation purposes. Fig. 4 shows the rear end of a fuselage in which inlets 28, 29 admit air from two different layers of the wake which are kept separate as far as the inlet to a blower 30 which delivers rearwardly through a nozzle 31.
