Abstract
504,747. Aero-engine cowlings. VICKERS (AVIATION), Ltd., PIERSON, R. K., and ELLIS, D. L. Oct. 30, 1937, Nos. 29726/37 and 29412 (38. [Classes 4 and 114] An aero-engine cowling has a rounded leading edge and a central forward aperture for the discharge of cooling-air between the forward part of the cowling and a spinner formed with a concave portion near its rear edge and adapted to deflect the air flowing over it, when the aircraft is in motion, substantially radially outwards and parallel to the path of the cooling air-flow. As shown, an aero-engine a is mounted in a cowling b having a partition b<2> and an extension c provided with a forwardly - facing cooling - air intake c<1>. The cooling-air passes forwardly over the engine and emerges between the cowling and the spinner d<1> having the general form shown. The gap between the spinner and cowling may be of the order of 1 per cent of the diameter of the spinner. The sides of the spinner may subtend to the axis an angle of 45‹ and the tangent at the, rearmost end an angle y of the order of 20‹. A rotor g may be driven through gearing g<1>, g<2> and clutch g<3> to increase the flow of cooling air and guide vanes h may be< >fixed to the cowling. In a modification, forwardly facing air intakes i, i<1> are situated at the leading edge of the wing and passages j . . . j<3> communicate with the intakes and with suction slots k<1> which are unmarked when the trailing-edge flap k is depressed. Valves l, l<1> are provided to enable the cooling' air to be taken from the intakes or the slots.
