Abstract
535,253. Aircraft engine accessories. HAWKER AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and STANBURY, J. V. Aug. 2, 1939, No. 22429. [Class 4] A radiator 10 for engine cooling liquid or lubricant and designed to reduce aero-dynamic drag is arranged around the propeller shaft 4 in the tubular portion 7 of a cooling duct extending from the leading edge 5 of the aeroplane wing. The forward part 7a of the duct is reduced to form with a troughed ring 9 behind the spinner 6 a gap 8. Air enters slots in the leading edge of the wing and passes through passages 11, 12 to the duct 7, where it issues in a rearward direction through the annular gap 8 with a reaction effect. The gap may be varied in diameter by forming the tapered end 7a of the duct of a number of pivoted overlapping flaps or gills. The spinner may be made doublewalled for the passage of air from the radiator to prevent undue cooling of the mechanism for controlling the pitch of the airscrew.
