Abstract
547,515. Cooling cylinders. CROSS, R. C., and CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938), Ltd. July 9, 1941, No. 8647. [Class 7 (ii)] In an air cooling system for twin engines arranged so that when one is in operation the other is ready as a stand-by, means are provided for automatically controlling the flow of the cooling-air so that it is supplied only to the engine which is in use. Fig. 1 shows twin aircraft engines 3, 4 supplied with cooling-air from a duct 1 open at each end 2 and connected to supply and return conduits 6, 7 for each engine. These conduits are controlled by flap valves 8, 9 which are operated automatically by a piston in a cylinder 10 acted on at opposite sides by oil from the lubrication systems of the two engines. The piston actuates the valves through push and pull cables 11 or other connections.
