Abstract

634,362. Fluid-actuated valves. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 6, 1945, No. 2963. Convention date, Feb. 8, 1944. [Class 135] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXIV] A valve device for preventing leakage of liquid from an elevated supply tank to a consuming device when no liquid is needed or the supply pump fails comprises two separate spring-biassed valves arranged respectively in the supply and return conduits between the tank and the consuming device and mechanically connected so that the opening of one of the valves opens the other. As shown, the device 18 comprises a spring-closed check valve 30 arranged in a supply conduit 13 between a tank 10 and a lubricating or other supply pump 12 leading to a consumer 11 such as a bearing or gearing of an aircraft turbosupercharger. The second valve comprises a spring-closed check valve 32 in the return line 17 between the consumer 11 and the tank 10, a scavenging pump 15 being arranged between the consumer 11 and the device 18. The valve 32 has a hollow stem 35 in which slides the stem 34 of the valve 30, axial clearance 37 being provided between the valve stems so that the valve 32 leaves its seat 27 first. The valve 32 is of piston form so that the valve 30 is fully open before the port leading back to the top of the tank 10 is uncovered by the piston 32. The casing of the device 18 is made in three parts 19, 20, 21 secured together by bolts 22, 23. U.S.A. Specification 2,312,063 is referred to.
