450,047. Cooling charge. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., FEDDEN, A. H. R., and BARRINGTON, T. B., Filton House, Bristol. June 6,1935, No. 16491. [Class 7 (ii)] A radial-cylinder internal-combustion engine for aircraft comprises a supercharging-compressor, an annular induction manifold having an unobstructed bore and communicating with all the inlet ports, and a number of multitubular cooling-radiators arranged within the area bounded by the manifold and opposite the spaces between the cylinders and each connected between the compressor and the manifold. As applied to an engine comprising a crank-case 10 and air-cooled cylinders 11, a blower-casing containing a centrifugal compressor 13 is attached to the rear of the crankcase and has outlets to each of which a union 14 is connected, each union forming a header for a bank of tubes 15 forming a cooling- radiator. The radiators are arranged on radial axes lying between the cylinders, and the outer end of each bank of tubes is connected to a header 17 formed in the wall of a pipe 18 having stuffing-box connections with a curved pipe 25 connected to the inlet ports of a cylinder, the series of pipes 18, 25 thus forming a continuous ring passing right around the engine.
