Class 122(i) [Also in Group XXXIV] A piston is provided with a gudgeon pin bearing load relieving device comprising a shoe member 4, Fig. 1, which bears against the small end of the connecting rod 1 under the influence of a helical spring 6 disposed between the shoe 4 and a piston crown diaphragm 7. A flange 9 on the piston skirt 8 carries a locating and guiding sleeve 10 for the shoe 4. Lubricant is supplied through a passage 11 to the bearing surface of the shoe 4. The arrangement enables lubricant to reach the working surfaces of the normally continuously loaded side of the bearings. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the shoe 4 is formed as a piston located in a cylinder port 13 of the skirt 8. The space 14 is supplied with liquid such as the piston cooling medium or lubricating oil through a pipe 15 connected to an hydraulic pump 16 which is operated by a cam 17 attached to the connecting rod 1.
