Abstract
1,099,296. Pistons. G. F. GROSSHANS, and J. G. H. OLLIER. Oct. 12, 1966 [Oct. 22, 1965], No. 45650/66. Heading F2T. In a piston comprising a body 1 a head 3 secured to the body and an annular crown member 5 surrounding the head 3 in a fluidtight manner and forming therewith a cooling chamber 7 through which liquid coolant is circulated, the member 5 is secured to the body 1 by screws 6 having their heads 6a located in the chamber 7. The screws 6, which pass through holes 10 in the base 5a of the member 5, engage steel sleeves 12 in the light metal body 1 and are secured before the head is fixed in position. The member 5 may be shrunk-on, welded or brazed to the piston head which is secured to the body 1 by screws 14. Engine lubricating oil used as cooling liquid is supplied to the chamber 7 through an inlet conduit 8 and returns partly through a conduit 9 and partly through a conduit 19 via conduits 17, chamber 16 and conduits 18.
