C. engine a cylinder is secured to a cylinder head and surrounded by a cooling jacket so as to form with two seating means 7, Fig.1 lying in transverse planes spaced apart along the length of the cylinder and cylinder head a cooling jacket, a return conduit 9 and a coolant transfer zone 17, Fig. 2 formed by a gap between the jacket and the cylinder head.
