In an internal combustion engine a jet of cooling oil is projected from the cylinder block 1 against the underside of the or each piston 15. A passage 12 in the lower part 7 of the block 1 communicates with the engine lubrication system and has outlet 13 from which jets of oil issue, preferably continuously, to cool the pistons.
