Abstract

1,255,085. Cooling pistons. INDUSTRIEELE HANDELSCOMBINATIE HOLLAND N.V. 27 Oct., 1969 [5 Nov., 1968], No. 52533/69. Heading F2T. An I.C. engine piston is cooled by supplying coolant over the underside of the piston head through an aperture 16 formed between the upper end of an insert 9 and a smooth curved transitional surface formed between the piston head and side wall 3, the space 18 in the insert into which the coolant is delivered being arranged to retain a predetermined quantity of coolant and discharge excess coolant through an outlet 10. The coolant is supplied from the piston-rod 5 through passages 17 to an annular recess 15 whence it passes through one or more slots 16 and flows as a layer across the underside of the piston head. The coolant collects around the outlet 10 which has an opening that is large compared with the quantity of coolant to be carried off back to the engine sump. During reciprocation of the piston, the layer of coolant mixes with the coolant thrown up from the region of the outlet 10.
