Abstract
829,971. Pistons. RICARDO & CO. ENGINEERS (1927) Ltd. Oct. 6, 1958 [Nov. 7, 1957], No. 34771/57. Class 122 (1). A piston 6, reciprocable in a cylinder 2 of an internal-combustion engine, comprises a cooling-oil retaining trough 13 having an edge portion or one or more outlet passages to determine the depth of oil therein, and passage 3 formed in a cylinder for delivering oil into the trough. The trough is formed with a rim 14 and and is retained on the underside 10 of the piston head by screws 12. A cup-like portion 16 formed integrally with the trough is arranged with one edge below an oil passage 19 in the piston so that, when the latter is in the bottom dead-centre position, oil may be fed from a gallery 4 into the cup via the passage 3 and a groove 20 in the piston. In operation, the oil retained in the cup is thrown upward and impinges on a curved surface 18 on the underside of the piston head and is thereby deflected into the trough. During continued movement of the piston the oil is shaken between the piston surface 10 and the trough thereby cooling the piston head, a quantity of oil escaping over the rim edge and returning to the crankcase. The trough 13 and cup 16 may be formed partly or wholly as an integral part of the piston 6 or partly or wholly as separate units. Specifications 617,224, 724,354 and 786,985 are referred to.
