Abstract

606,990. Combustion chambers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Jan. 23, 1946, No. 2182. Convention date, Jan. 26, 1945. [Class 7 (ii)] An overhead-valve internal-combustion engine has a crescent-shaped combustion chamber which tapers in width and height from a maximum at the central part to almost zero at the extremities. The cylinder head has a recess 8 with an inclined roof and the piston has a raised portion 15 with a correspondingly inclined upper surface so that when the piston is at top-dead-centre position a chamber 9 of the form described above exists in the head, and a quench area, overlapping the valves 13 and 14, is formed between the portion 15 and the roof of the recess. A spark-plug 11 is provided in the wall of the central part of the chamber.
