763,392. Compression ignition engines. HERCULES MOTORS CORPORATION. July 21, 1954 [April 22, 1954], No. 21237/54. Class 7 (3). The piston of a compression ignition engine is provided with stepped recess 21-8, Fig. 4, having a lower portion 21-9 and an upper portion 21-10 which breaks into the corner of the piston head. The engine described is identical with that described in Specification 732,938, apart from the recess 21-8 in the piston, which recess is arranged opposite the outlet P, Fig. 1, of the combustion chamber C at top dead centre and prevents the build up of deposits on that part of the piston. The upper portion 21-10 of the recess is of the same width as the combustion chamber outlet P, the lower portion 21-9 being of greater width and also of greater depth than the upper portion.
