Packing, metallic; packing, removable casings, containers, or carriers for. - A stuffing-box contains two segmental packing rings 2, having wedge pieces 3 between the segments, the segments and wedge pieces being pressed inwards by springs 16. Each packing ring is contained in a carrier ring 4 of L-section, the mouth of which is closed by a ring 8 with a peripheral split packing ring. The two carrier rings are separated by a ring 10, with a peripheral split packing ring or rings, and are pressed axially by a single spring or a number of springs 15. A spherical ring 13 is interposed between the gland and the packing. To facilitate assembly, the rings 4, 8, 10 and 13 may be made in parts secured together. In a modification, the wedge pieces 3 are dispensed with, the segments being then more numerous, and compressed by radial springs or a garter spring. For small rods the container rings 4 and the spherical ring 13 are dispensed with. In this case the rings 8 make contact with the walls of the stuffing-box and one ring 8 is interposed between the packing rings, and another ring 8 is interposed between the inner packing ring and the end of the box. For a rotating shaft a single packing ring with a single container ring 4 is employed, the latter having a peripheral split packing ring making contact with the wall of the stuffing-box. In this case, rotation of the packing is prevented by screws or pins entering holes or slots in the carrier ring,. the packing segments and wedges and the ring 8.
