Abstract
436,139. Stuffing - box packing. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 27, 1935, No. 21413. Convention date, July 27, 1934. [Class 122 (v)] Packing-rings comprising a number of segments are housed between the partitions of a casing around the shaft and are held against the shaft by spring-controlled bands. Leaf springs secured to the bands are arranged to exert longitudinal pressure between the radial faces of the packing and the opposed radial walls of the casing. The halves of the casing 10, 11 are secured by studs 12 and house an inner casing 13, 14 also in halves and held against movement by a projection 18 engaging a recess 11 and by pins 17. The packing is housed in cells formed by partitions 18, and comprises carbon or like material in segments mounted resiliently in a band 22 secured by a clamping bolt 25, and a spring 26 engaging an angle piece 2 and a head on the bolt engaging another angle piece 23. Stops 31 and a shoulder on the casing engaging the bolt prevent rotary motion. The band 22 carries leaf springs which engage the segments by their tips and the partitions by their curved parts 34 whereby the segments are pressed against the other partitions. The band 22 engages an annular shoulder 41 on the segments.
