In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft d and compring a seal ring e slidably mounted in a housing h and urged outwardly therefrom by springs g into sealing contact with a cooperating seal ring a in order to facilitate insertion and removal the ring e, housing h and springs g are detachably held together as a unit by a metal cap m which has a cylindrical part n sprung on to the housing with an inwardly projecting lip o engaging a recess around the housing. The seal ring e has a seal insert f and, in the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, rotates with the shaft d. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the ring is non-rotatable.
