Abstract

379,210. Lubricating stuffing-boxes. SMITH, R. J., FOSTER, F. H., and HASLAM & NEWTON, Ltd., Union Foundry, Derby. Jan. 16, 1932, No. 1366. [Class 12 (ii).] The casing of a stuffing-box substitute is provided with two non-rotary rings which have faces resiliently engaging two rings rotating with the shaft. Faces on the rotary rings eccentric to the shaft engage faces on the non- rotary rings concentric with the shaft so that lubricant supplied to the casing is maintained upon the rubbing surfaces. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the ring c is prevented from rotating by a stud f and the ring d is clamped between the casing e and its cover. The rings m, n have eccentric rubbing faces, Fig. 2, the opposite sides of which are chamfered off, and are provided with boxes containing packing r, s, which is engaged by glands o, p under the action of a spring q. Lubricant is supplied through a passage t in the shaft. In a modification, one of the non-rotary rings is carried by a diaphragm, and the other non-rotary ring is held up to the co-acting rotary ring on the shaft by a spring-pressed gland engaging packing in a recess therein. The oil is contained in an exterior reservoir to which it is supplied through a filler and from which it passes into the space between the packing-rings.
