Abstract

499,480. Stuffing-box packing. ANGUS & CO., Ltd., G. (Freudenberg, H.) Sept. 7, 1938, No. 26141. [Class 122 (v)] The peripheral sealing surface of an oil seal contacting a relatively moving machine part is formed with axially and circumferentially extending ridges g adapted to retain lubricant between them and precluding communication between the sides of the washer. The ridges may extend in sinuous or zigzag lines around the surface or may comprise sets of intercrossing parallel ridges. The depressions between ridges may be filled with lubricant, e.g. hard fat. The sealing washer may be spring-loaded and may be enclosed in a metal casing b or may be a press fit in a housing or on a shaft, in which case the press fit portion d is reinforced by a ring e. The seal may be of the internal type, Fig. 1, or of the external type, Fig. 4.
