Abstract

Packing, metallic; boxes; glands; followers. -A packing-ring comprises segments each formed with a tongue 39 engaging a recess in the adjoining segment, the meeting surfaces 44, 45 of each tongue and recess being tangential and extending from a point on the periphery of the ring to a point beyond the diameter at right-angles to the tangent. The opposed surfaces 40, 41 at the end of one segment and at the root of the tongue of the other segment are radial for large rods and at an acute angle to the surfaces 44, 45 for smaller rods. The packing-ring is pressed by the fluid pressure both upon the rod and against a ring 33<1> formed in halves and covering the face of the packing-ring containing the tongues and recesses. The rings are held by springs 47, 34. A single packing-ring and cover ring may be employed, or two pairs, as shown. In the latter case one pair of rings is contained in a gland 25' and the other in a ring 35 housed in a recess in the gland and pressed against a ring 24 closing the mouth of the stuffing-box.
