Packing, adjusting; packing, metallic. - An elastic ring, consisting of two parts a, b separated by springs, is interposed between the gland c and fibrous or rubber packing l. The springs are arranged in oblong sockets d in the part a, or in recesses formed in both parts a, b. In the latter case, the part a is provided with lugs which may receive pins on the part b. Two rings m, n, having metallic packing between them, are arranged at the upper end of the box. The metallic packing consists of a split L-sectioned circular ring o, a split bevelled ring p, and a segmental white-metal packing-ring q, of triangular section in contact with the rod.
