The gap, Fig. 3, in each packing-ring a is covered by an outer split ring b, and the end of the gap exposed to the steam is covered by an L-shaped plate c, secured either between the rings a, b as shown, or outside the ring b. The compressing action of the steam on the ring a is lessened by the friction between the rings a, b, and the amount of this friction can be varied by altering the relative positions of the rings. The rings a, bare embraced by coiled springs f joined at their ends opposite the plate c by links.
