Abstract

539,038. Stuffing-boxes. NAPIER & SON, Ltd., D., and HALFORD, F. B. Feb. 24, 1940, No. 3511. [Classes 122 (i) and 122 (v)] A scraper, piston or junk ring assembly for pistons or sleeve valves with a groove built up of at least two separate parts A, B comprises one or more split rings with two separately-formed washer-like members J, K between the flat sides of the groove and the adjacent faces of the rings. One form, Fig. 3, comprises a pair of split rings C, D with a backing member G and intermediate spring ring H. Members J, K, may be riveted to the backing G, or they may have peripheral flanges overlapping behind the backing G, which may be solid or split. Members J, K may interlock by an extension K<2> with bead K<3> sprung over the rounded edge J<2> of member J. Alternatively, Fig. 7, members J, K have peripheral flanges J<1>, K<1> sprung over ribs G<1> on the backing G. The scraper may consist of a single split ring C<1>. The parts A, B may consist of a cylinder and its crank-case.
