Abstract
538,285. Piston rings. SCHEIDING, J. T. D. M. Jan. 25, 1940, No. 1565. Convention date, May 19, 1939. [Class 122 (i)] The cavity behind an expanding piston ring is sealed against fluid pressure applied to the top of the piston by an upper ring in the groove, normally contracting against the bottom of the groove. Each ring 3, Fig. 3, has above it a sealing ring 2 seating in the bottom of the groove and pressed axially against ring 3 by fluid pressure admitted by a vertical or inclined passage 5 in the piston head, by reducing the diameter of the head, or by transverse grooves in the upper part of the seal ring. A lower seal ring may be provided and an inclined passage 51. The upper seal rings may have a downwardly extending flange passing into the cavity behind the ring 3, Fig. 6. In a modification, Fig. 7, the top ring 2 is level with the piston head and is keyed thereto by a ring 7 which may be an integral part of the piston. The,piston may have two grooves each with one ring 2 and one ring 3.
