Piston packing; pistons.-A piston has a ring portion comprising ring segments separated from the body of the ring portion by circumferential spiral cuts. In one form, the piston consists of two rings 1, 2 connected by members 3 which carry the bearings for the wrist-pin 5. Two ring segments 7 are separated from each ring by two circumferential spiral cuts 8 intersected by two cuts 9 from the upper end of the ring. The ring segments are expanded to a diameter greater than that of the cylinder, and are set in that position, as by heating, so that, when the piston is forced into the cylinder, the ring segments press on the cylinder wall. The upper edges of the ring segments 7 are beveled to enable fluid pressure to force them against the cylinder. The ring 1 is provided with similar ring segments, provided with beveled edges for scraping oil from the cylinder wall. The head 14 is screwed into the ring 2, or is formed integrally therewith.
