Abstract

Piston packing; pistons. -A piston is split or cut for a part of its length to form radially movable parts which are held apart by means of a wrist-pin or other bridging member, whereby the necessary pressure between the piston and cylinder is maintained without packing-rings &c. In one form, the piston is made from a cast. ing comprising two rings 1, 2 connected by members 3 which carry the bearings 7 for the wristpin 9. The ring 2 preferably carries two crosspieces ending in two lugs 6, and is divided into two segments by cuts 8. The bearings 7 are slightly inclined downwards so that, when the pin 9 is inserted, the two segments are forced outwards. The segments are then forced together by means of a nut and bolt in lugs 6, and while in this condition the outer surface of the piston is finished, leaving the ring 2 in a permanent state of strain. The nut and bolt are then removed and the piston inserted in the cylinder, where the expansive strain of the ring 2 maintains a close fit with the cylinder. The head 15 of the piston is fitted in the ring 2 by means of a flange 16 which may carry a flange 17 engaging a groove in the inner surface of the ring. The cuts 8 are closed by plates 18 engaging the head 15.
