Abstract

Piston packing; pistons.-A piston includes a lower rigid ring and connexions integral therewith between said ring and several segments of another ring, each connexion ending at a different segment, and the segment being forced out radially by the resilience of the metal. In one form, the piston includes a lower rigid ring 1 connected by integral members 3 to a ring 2 divided into four equal segments by cuts 5, each member 3 ending at a separate segment. The four segments are pressed together to the position they would occupy in the cylinder, and while they are in this position the piston is finished to a size in which the diameter of the ring 2 while compressed is equal to the internal diameter of the cylinder, and the lower portion of the piston is made slightly smaller. The ring 1 has a number of lubricant grooves. The wrist pin 7 is mounted in bosses 4 carried by the ring 1. A removable head 8 has a bevelled portion 9 fitting against the bevelled upper edges of the segments and carries a flange 11 provided with a flange 12 engaging a shoulder inside the ring 2. The bevelled surfaces 9, 10 enable the head to expand the segments when pressure is applied to it. The spaces between the ends of the segments are closed by keys 13.
