415,325. Making piston-rings. WELLWORTHY, Ltd., and BLACKITH, F., Radial Works, Stanford Road, Lymington, Hampshire. Jan. 19, 1934, No. 1928. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv).] Internal metal-working formers.-A split piston-ring when shaped to its final form is placed for heat treatment on a mandrel having an external peripheral portion similar in size and shape to the internal periphery of the piston ring when unstressed. One form of mandrel has a number of ring grooves 12 the base of each groove being shaped similar to that of the inside of a piston-ring in its unstressed condition, the transverse axis 16, Fig. 2, being greater than that of the vertical axis 15. Instead of ring grooves a plain mandrel may be used on which the rings are secured by a screwed ring or end plates held together by bolts. A modification comprises a tubular member 18, Fig. 5, originally turned to have an external periphery similar to the internal periphery of the rings when stressed or closed, which is then split longitudinally by a thin saw and opened out to receive a bar 21 of such a width as to give to the tubular member an outside periphery similar to the internal periphery of an unstressed ring, the bar 21 may be slightly proud of the tubular member for correctly positioning the rings.
