541,902. Cylinder liners and valve guides ; valve-gear. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Jan. 31, 1940, No. 1941. Convention date, March 20, 1939. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi)] [Also in Groups XXII, XXVI and XXXIV] Split liners for cylinders, bearings for tappets, valve stems, shafts &c. are made from blanks 11 cut from sheet steel and bent to cylindrical form round a mandril 12, Fig. 2, such that the edges substantially abut at 13a. The sheet is of spring steel and may be Nitralloy. After bending, the edges of the sheet spring apart leaving a substantial gap and the blank is heat-treated and if desired hardened as by nitrogenization. The blank is then inserted in a cylinder corresponding in size with that to be lined and the inside is bored to the required diameter. The cylinder diameter and the internal diameter of the liner when in position may be stamped on the edge of the liner. When in position the gap 14 is not quite closed so that the liner may be further contracted to ensure easy fitting in the cylinder in which it is retained by a flange at 26. In a modification the gap has a helical form and the liner has a flange at its upper end that is received into a counterbore in the cylinder.
