Abstract
151,898. Gray, W. H., and Howlett, J. W. March 1, 1920. Rings.-A piston-ring is cut from a cylinder having machined inner and outer peripheries, and after the formation of the joint, by obliquely splitting the ring or otherwise, the ring is expanded, and placed in a die b having a recess c, the periphery of which is shaped to correspond to the outer periphery of the ring in its expanded state. The ring is held in the expanded condition by a block e inserted between its ends, and the inner periphery of the ring is hammered, the amount of hammering depending on the outward pressure which the ring is required to exert. The inner and outer peripheries of the ring may be concentric or eccentric. Alternatively a ring may be formed from a blank of the shape of an expanded split ring, by removing sufficient metal to permit the required contraction, the ring being hammered as in the first case.
