Abstract

278,048. Okochi, M., Ebihara, K., and Zaidan Hojin Rikagaku Henkyjujo. June 1, 1926. Piston packing.-Split packing-rings are made by turning split blanks to truly cylindrical form while held closed only by pins at the split parallel to the axis of the blank. In order to secure uniform thickness of the finished rings, the blanks may be oval. A split cylinder a, Fig. 3, is secured in a lathe by end lugs c and is held closed during turning by brackets secured at opposite sides of the slit and connected by pins d. After turning the rings are cut off, the split being held closed by a clamp e. The split in the blank may be formed with engaging projections and recesses, the finished rings thus having stepped joints, as shown. Alternatively separate annular blanks may be mounted on a mandrel for turning, the split of each blank being held closed by a pin, or the blanks may be arranged in pairs secured together by two pins, 2, 2<1>, Fig. 10, at each split. The finished rings may be arranged in pairs, relative movement being prevented by a pin.
