Abstract
117,066. Johnson, C. D., and Johnson, P. C. June 20, 1917, [Convention date]. Pistons.-Relates to pistons for internal-combustion engines which are made in two parts relatively movable axialy to obtain an efficient scavenging effect, the two parts being separated by a spring which yields under the compression pressure employed. As shown in Fig. 1, such a. piston is made in two parts 2, 3, the part 3 being screwed at 7 to receive a ring 8 by which the spring is adjusted. The gudgeon pin 11 is carried by the part 3 which has vent holes 19, to facilitate free movement between the parts. Rotation between the parts is prevented by pins in the inner part moving in slots in the outer part. During the compression stroke, the spring is compressed, while during the scavenging stroke the spring expands so that the part 2 closely approaches the cylinder-end.
