Abstract

Connecting-rods.-In order to reduce the clearance at the ends of the exhaust stroke of an internal-combustion engine, the connecting-rod is made in two parts sliding one wthin the other. One part d is formed with packing grooves j and works as a piston in a cylindrical chamber i formed in the other part a. Relative movement of the parts is limited by a bolt f, carried by the part a, and passing through a slot in the part d. The parts are pressed apart by a spring h, and their inward movement is cushioned by the compression of the a.ir in the space i. A port k may be formed in the walls of the chamber i in order to restore air lost by leakage. In the case of a rotary engine, the piston d is sealed by oil collecting in the chamber i.
