Abstract

7261. Steward, G. R. May 14. Steam-engines convertible into internal-combustion engines; compound engines; engines with two or more parallel cylinders with axes perpendicular to main shaft; exhaust, treating; valve chests and casings.-In a compound steamengine which is convertible into an internalcombustion engine, the exhaust from the highpressure cylinder takes place through a valve in the piston and a valve in the cylinder end. The high-pressure cylinder a and the lowpressure cylinder g may be in duplicate, and are separated by an exhaust receiver q. When used as a steam-engine, the steam is admitted to the high-pressure cylinder by a valve situated in a steam-dome k, the steam being admitted in either one or two puffs. The valve i is opened by the end of the piston-rod m, or by a tappet rod n acting on a lever on a spindle o. At the end of the forward stroke, projections d on a valve c in the piston come in contact with an exhaust valve e in the end of the cylinder. Both valves open against the action of springs, and the steam passes to a receiver f. The admission valve h to the low-pressure cylinder g is opened by the piston i through a cushion spring r. The exhaust takes place through terminal ports p to the receiver q. When the engine is to be used as an internal-combustion engine, the valve j and bonnet k are replaced by a bonnet fitted with a sparking-plug, induction pipe, and the necessary valves. The high-pressure cylinder works on a four-stroke cycle.
