Abstract

5266. Dansette, C., and Dansette, G. March 3, 1905, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901]. - Engines with two or more cylinders with common cross-head; pistons.-The cylinders of two- and four-stroke cycle internal-combustion engines, which may also act as steam-engines, are arranged in two or more tandem pairs which drive on to the crank through cross-heads disposed between the pairs of cylinders. In the four-stroke internalcombustion engine shown in Fig. 1, each pair of cylinders 1,1 ; 2, 2 is provided with a double piston 6,7 ; 8,9 which is connected to the crank-pin 12. through a beam 10 and connecting-rod 11. Each coacting pair of cylinders 1, 2 is in open communication through a port 13, one of which is shown in Fig. 1. If preferred, the crank-shaft may be arranged at right-angles to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The inlet and exhaust valves are shown at 15, 16 ; 17, 18, Fig. 3, one set of valves serving for each pair of communicating cylinders 1, 2. The valve spindles are operated by rollers, carried in forked arms embracing the cam shaft 21. The forked arms keep the rollers in contact with the cams through the intervention of springs 29.
