Abstract

225,223. Sullivan, M. H. Nov. 20, 1923, [Convention date]. Piston packing.-In packing of the type in which halved rings 6 are expanded by spring-pressed plungers 12 in diametrical guides 11, the ends of the ring segments being sealed by blocks 8 located in recesses at the sides of the packing-ring grooves and formed with ribs 9 engaging grooves in the ends of the segments, the grooves and ribs are straight and converge outwardly. In order to retain the packing in its grooves when the piston is removed from its cylinder, the extrusion of the plungers may be limited by pins 17 secured in the guides 11 and passing through slots in the plungers, the latter having projections 14 engaging recesses in the ring segments. The joints of the packing-rings are preferably arranged at 45‹ to the gudgeonpin. Specifications 198,080 and 231,033 are referred to.
