Abstract

271,225. Gibson, J. L. April 20, 1936. Pistons; piston packing. - Packing- rings 13 are of H- section and fit ribs 10, 11 in packing- ring grooves in a carrier comprising a plate 4 secured to the end of the piston and having a dependent flange 5, which fits a portion of the piston of reduced diameter. Balancing steam is admitted to the peripheral grooves in the rings 13 by perforations 10<a>, the steam being supplied through the ribs 10, 11 by passages 9, 19. The passages 9 open to the exterior of the plate 4, while the passages 19 open into a groove 18, which communicates with passages 20 in the piston flange. The rings 13 are preferably in halves, the ends being slotted to receive tongue pieces 17 formed on blocks 15, situated in gaps in the ribs 10. 11 and pressed outwards by springs. The blocks have ribs 16 forming continuations of the ribs 10, 11.
