Abstract

Pistons; packing.-Split packing-rings of the box type in which two rings are formed with interengaging projections and recesses, are arranged to prevent, outward expansion of the split ends without restricting expansion elsewhere. One ring 4 may be formed with an eccentric flange 6 engaging a concentric groove 5 in the other ring 3, expansion of the ends of the ring 4 being prevented by contact between the outer sides of the groove 5 and flange 6, while expansion of the ends of the ring 3 is prevented by contact between the inner sides of the groove 5 and flange 6. Alternatively, the flange 6 may be concentric and the groove 5 eccentric, or both rings may be grooved, one groove containing a ring having a flange which engages the groove in the other ring in an eccentric manner. The two rings may be made to differ in resilience.
